Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)   Why am I being asked to LOGIN to the IITDEF website ? In order to ensure that only registered IIT Delhi alumni use the facilities provided on the IITDEF website, we are restricting the usage of many of the IITDEF website's popular but resource constrained features, such as the Jobs Board or the Alumni Directory, to registered members who have logged-in. Non-members may visit other pages in the website such as the News pages or the Message Board, but they cannot access or use the restricted areas of the website.   Why should I register on the IITDEF website ? IITDEF offers a range of useful features for IITians, including a lifelong e-mail forwarding facility, Jobs Board, Resume Bank, Alumni Directory, Class Notes, Chat Room and we plan to add other features that will be of use to you. If you are an alumnus of IIT Delhi, the registration process is quite simple. Just click on RegisterMe.asp and follow the instructions. We check each new Alumni Directory entry with the official IIT Delhi graduation records before validating a new member, in order to ensure that all members are graduates of IIT Delhi. If you are an IIT Delhi alumnus but think that the official lists may not include your name for some reason, please contact directory@iitdef.org prior to registering. Back to FAQs   What is the lifelong e-mail forwarding facility that the IIT Delhi Excellence Foundation is offering ? IITDEF is delighted to offer this facility to all alumni registered in the Alumni Directory. This facility will allow you to have a permanent address tied to your alma mater, even though you may move your actual e-mail account between providers such as your ISP, Yahoo, Hotmail or other e-mail service providers. Back to FAQs   How can I make changes to my Alumni Directory entry, such as when my primary e-mail address changes or when I move ? Do I need to write to the webmaster of the IITDEF website ? The IITDEF Alumni Directory is fully automated and works on a self-service basis. Members can make all desired changes to their database entry at any time by logging in to the site at login. We recommend that you take the time to periodically check your entry to ensure that all details are correct and up-to-date. Back to FAQs   Can I change my UserName and/or Password ? Members can change their UserName and/or Password at any time by logging in to the site at login page Note that UserNames are given out on a first-come-first-served basis and the only characters that are permitted are "a-z", "A-Z", "0-9", "-", "_", and "." While the UserName is case insensitive, please note that passwords are case-sensitive. Back to FAQs   What if I forget my UserName or Password ? The IITDEF website offers an automated reminder service which can be accessed by clicking on Forget Password. All you need to remember is your primary e-mail address as specified in your Alumni Directory entry ... if you have forgotten your primary e-mail address, please write to directory@iitdef.org giving your full name, year of graduation, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number, and we will contact you directly for security reasons to give you the UserName and Password. Back to FAQs   How does the proxy e-mail facility work and how do you prevent headhunters, junk-mailers and others from targeting alumni listed in the database? The IITDEF Alumni Directory listings never display the actual e-mail address of any alumni. Instead, anyone wishing to send an e-mail must locate the IITian in the database and fill out a form, which then sends out a message without the sender ever seeing the actual e-mail address. Subsequently, if the recipient so chooses, s/he can respond to the sender and thereby establish direct e-mail contact between the two consenting alumni. In addition, members are also restricted from sending more than a pre-set number of messages to protect members from mass mailings. If you wish to contact a large group of alumni via the database, please write to webmaster@iitdef.org in advance explaining the reasons. Back to FAQs   Why do some names appear in blue or a different color when I look at a particular listing ? The name of an alumnus may appear to be blue or a different color if that person has a website / home page, and clicking on the name will take you to that website. Back to FAQs   Why have you restricted Proxy E-mail access to registered members only ? For privacy reasons and to prevent unwanted spamming from non-alumni visitors, we have restricted full access to registered members who are IIT Delhi alumni. Guest visitors can browse some limited information but cannot send e-mails to members. For example, if your Directory UserName is RamSingh and the Primary e-mail address you have specified in the IITDEF Alumni Directory is rs123@hotmail.com, then all mail sent to ramsingh@iitdef.org will be forwarded to rs123@hotmail.com. Back to FAQs   What is my permanent forwarding e-mail address going to be ? The e-mail UserName is the same as the UserName that you chose for the IITDEF Alumni Directory. Back to FAQs   Are e-mail addresses case-sensitive ? The e-mail UserName and the IITDEF Alumni Directory UserName are both case insensitive, and therefore ramsingh@iitdef.org as well as RamSingh@iitdef.org will both work. However, please note that passwords are case-sensitive. Back to FAQs   Which address will all e-mail be forwarded to ? All e-mail sent to your IITDEF-provided address will be forwarded to the "primary email address" as specified in the database (rs123@hotmail.com in the above example). Back to FAQs   What happens if I have chosen to keep my e-mail address "PRIVATE" in the IITDEF Directory ? If you have chosen to turn on the flag "Keep email address private", then the e-mail forwarding facility will not be functional. This is to protect your privacy since you will have indicated your preference that your e-mail address should stay private. Therefore, if you wish to avail of the IITDEF Alumni Directory proxy e-mail service and the e-mail forwarding service, the privacy flag should be turned off. Updating your Directory UserName or your Primary e-mail address in the IITDEF Alumni Directory will automatically and immediately update the UserName and e-mail forwarding address. Back to FAQs   Why, when and how was the IITDEF Alumni Directory automated ? The IITDEF Alumni Directory was automated in the Fall of 2000 in order to provide a live, on-line database which alumni can use to locate friends and classmates. The database is a critical element of the service offering that IITDEF is delivering to alumni in helping build a community and a network of IITians the world over. The database was designed by a group of volunteers spread across the US, and the coding as well as ongoing maintenance of the software is the responsibility of a private Mumbai-based company, eParle Inc.
